The School

Haiti's education system is dominated by private schools and are largely run for profit. State Laws encourage private education services, but the state has limited capacity to oversee and to monitor the proliferation of privately held schools-many operate without legal accreditation from the Ministry of Education. The quality of education offered in such establishments isn’t guaranteed by State Institutions and the illiteracy rate in Haiti has reached an appalling 75 percent.

L’Ecole de Choix is a trilingual elementary school in Mirebalais, offering an exceptional education for children living in extreme poverty in Haiti. It’s a place where students have an opportunity to learn the skills they need to become future leaders of Haiti, with a strong sense of Haitian identity, pride, self-respect and dignity. And with an education, they’ll be able to support themselves and their families, to educate their own children, and end the cycle of poverty. The school is active, with 180 children enrolled in grades 1-6.

BCD Travel supports L’Ecole de Choix because we believe in their philosophy around educating children. Here are some specifics:

  • Students are taught to be responsible and make ethical decisions, while modeling them to be leaders.

  • Classes are in English, French and Creole.

  • Students get both a morning snack and a warm lunch, providing an incentive for families to send their children to school every day.

  • Unlike other rural schools in Haiti, tuition fees are discretionary and can be paid over the course of the year.

  • The school has an equal mix of boys and girls.

  • Classroom learning is enriched with extra-curricular activities, such as lessons on equality and inclusion, health, anti-bullying and non-violence, and sexual orientation.

  • The teachers at L’Ecole de Choix have university degrees and teaching certifications; the average class ratio at the school is 15 students per teacher. In Haiti, most schools have classrooms of 50+ students with non-certified teachers.

  • The school has a technology lab, an on-site nurse, a world-class curriculum, clean water, athletics, arts, parent education, and more.
